During this time of year, the San Juan festivities are very common, where typical foods, music, games and encounters between people are the protagonists.
That is why Lic. Rocío Argüello, Nutritionist of the Multidisciplinary Obesity Treatment Unit of the Hospital de Clínicas de la FCM-UNA, explained that Saint John’s Day is not only to focus on food.
“You can learn to enjoy everything, not just focus on typical foods,” he said.
It must be taken into account that traditional foods are a source of carbohydrates, but these are complex since their main ingredients are starch, corn flour, among others, some of them also have fats, but not entirely healthy as they are saturated, it is that’s why watching your portions is the key to enjoying these meals.
For this reason, what is indicated is not to abuse them, seeking to eat them in their original versions, but in the right portion. If they are the typical meals in snack versions, you can consume 4 to 5 of them, while, if we have large sizes, it is good to opt for 1 or 2 of those food portions.
Another important fact is that if people have a pathology such as diabetes or hypertension, they must be aware that the abuse of food is not convenient, just as people with celiac disease must take into account the preparation to avoid contamination in what they consume.
Finally, Lic. Argüello stressed that meals should be enjoyed, without excess, or restricted and isolated due to being on a diet, since these holidays are also for sharing and not just focusing on food.
