Aggressions against women increased at Fiestas de Quito

Excessive alcohol consumption caused emergencies in the Ecuadorian capital to increase as part of its celebrations for the Spanish foundation.

Emergencies increased in Quito. After a comparison of statistics of the capital’s festivals in 2020 and those of 2021, it is evident a 32% increase in all types of incidents who were attended by the Police, Firefighters and other emergency teams.

On December 3 and 4, 2020, there were 3,216 events, while in the same period this year, the authorities accounted for 4,239. 72% were of order and citizen security; that is to say, brawls, street brawls, crowds of people, damage to the good of others or disrespect for authority. Assaults or criminal violence are also counted here.

In videos broadcast throughout the weekend, youth clashes are observed in various sectors. In one of the latest recordings, a person is seen being beaten by a group even with kicks to the face while on the ground.

Violence against women

One of the most revealing pieces of information provided by the ECU-911 is that of the domestic violence. From Friday until 10:00 on Saturday there were 137 attacks on women inside their homes by couples, friends or family members. The figure represents an increase of 80.3% in relation to the same period in 2020, when there were 76 cases. That year there were greater restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For the vice president of the Council for the Protection of Rights of Quito, Sybel Martinez, there was an accumulation of factors that resulted in an increase in emergencies.

“What happens with women cannot be done without taking into account this atypical crisis. It is an increase in violence in all forms and manifestations. This is most evident with priority care groups such as children and women. who had already been dragging violations and violations of their rights ”.

The expert in Human rights He also indicated that the pandemic, the closures, the economic crises in homes, unemployment and frustrations also complicate the outlook. “This also happens due to the lack of response in mental health.”

Martínez indicated that another factor that directly affects domestic violence and all types of violence registered these days is the consumption of alcohol. From the ECU-911 they confirmed in emergencies for citizen security and due to transit, people in an alcoholic state were involved.
