Dictator Ortega assures that "imperialism" is being "buried"

The president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, said this Thursday that US “imperialism is being buried” and “a new multilateral world” is being born.

“This year, we are at the birth of a new world, yes, a new world is being born,” said the president during a speech at an event on the occasion of the 86th anniversary of the birth of the founder of Sandinismo, Carlos Fonseca Amador (1936- 1976).

“All births are painful and this is a birth of humanity where imperialism is being buried and democracy is being born, with what is multilateralism,” he added.

According to the Sandinista leader, “the peoples continue to strengthen themselves in the face of the death rattles, the blows of imperialism,” which he did not specify.

In Ortega’s opinion, “we are living a truly extraordinary, fantastic, magical, divine moment, which is the resurrection of Christ now with the resurrection of humanity, sinking imperialism and leaving the tombs of the peoples, resurrecting the peoples, uniting the peoples”.

Without referring to any particular geopolitical context or to the advance of the left in the American continent, the former Marxist guerrilla maintained that the peoples are “exercising true democracy in the world for peace, justice and freedom.”

“We are witnesses, brothers, of that miracle, which is the miracle of the resurrection,” he continued.

He explained that his Government joins “the peoples, the nations, that in the world we defend the sovereignty of the peoples.”

Ortega, 76, maintains an anti-imperialist rhetoric against the United States, which did not recognize last November’s elections in the Central American country, in which the Sandinista leader was re-elected for his fifth term with his main contenders in prison.

Washington did not invite Ortega to the Summit of the Americas, which was recently held in the city of Los Angeles, as he was branded anti-democratic by the United States.

The former guerrilla, who returned to the presidency in 2007 after having coordinated a Government Junta from 1979 to 1985 and presiding over the country for the first time from 1985 to 1990, is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has stated that Nicaragua is a Russia’s “very important” partner in Latin America.

Nicaragua is part of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), whose members are Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica, Granada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Venezuela; plus two special guests: Haiti and Suriname).
