Four security measures to withdraw money from ATMs

This year the government enacted the law that authorizes the use of 100% of the CTS until December 31, 2023 and the withdrawal of the AFP up to 4UIT. According to Insurance Banking Superintendencys (SBS), in 2021, workers withdrew a total of S/ 9,438 million from the accounts of Compensation for length of service (CTS). This can cause the Peruvian citizen to be a victim of delinquency.

Given this scenario, it shows that it would be an opportunity for “Owners of what is foreign”especially when it comes to people who are unaware of how digital tools or applications work, which today facilitate transactions and who feel “forced” to visit an ATM.

Santiago Barranzuela, Security Manager of Grupo EULEN Peru, indicates that using an ATM is very useful, but you have to be careful when you go to have cash to avoid being a victim of crime.

In this way, the specialist provides some security recommendations that citizens should take into account when withdrawing money or making a transaction, if it is necessary to physically go to the establishment anyway.

Check the cashier before using it: take a few seconds to verify that the cashier does not have any suspicious accessories or that seem unrelated to the cashier. Also, make sure that the pieces of these do not move, in order to confirm that there were no previous manipulations.
Do not accept help, or divert attention from the operation: in an oversight, a criminal can steal the card or confidential information, such as the password when typing it.

Do not provide information: the password and the CVV are confidential personal data and should not be shared with anyone, either by conversation or by messages. Preferably, if you are an adult who has difficulty with ATM operations, go to the window or platform of the same bank.
Avoid risk hours: It is recommended that withdrawals that represent large amounts of money be planned in advance – whether by the ATM or teller window – preferably accompanied by someone you trust and at times when there are more people in the surroundings.
Visit banking or shopping centers: to withdraw money, preferably not to go to ATMs located on the same avenues in view of all people. Preferably, opt for spaces with greater protection such as banking and shopping centers.
