The United States Coast Guard reported Thursday that 89 rafters were returned to Cuba after seven interceptions near the Florida Keys.
According to data from the entity, in 2021, 838 Cubans were intercepted; in 2020 just 49; in 2019, 313; in 2019, 259; and in 2017, 1,468.
So far in fiscal year 2022, 2,464 Cuban rafters have been intercepted.
Since October 1, 2021, the Coast Guard has recorded 39 confirmed deaths of people migrating illegally in unsafe, overloaded, and crude vessels.
Cubans not only emigrate by sea but also by land: more than 140,000 entered the United States through some border, according to the Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP for its acronym in English).
The Coast Guard said in a Press release that all the rescued Cubans had received food, water, shelter and basic medical care.
