“What José Daniel is going through, only his assassins know”

José Daniel Ferrer preso político

MIAMI, United States.- Several Cuban mothers denounced this Thursday during a CubaNet broadcast the situation their children are going through, sentenced to up to 20 years in prison for having participated in the anti-government protests of July 11, 2021.

In the transmission, with Yaima Pardo, a video was played in which Nelva Ortega, wife of political prisoner José Daniel Ferrer, He denounced that he has not heard from him for more than 17 days and has not been able to see him, and blamed the Cuban government for the physical integrity of the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU).

Ortega demanded proof of life from her husband, and announced in the video that she was going to the Mar Verde prison, in Santiago de Cuba, where José Daniel is being held, to try to see him and talk to him.

With her three-year-old son in her arms, Nelva Ortega said that this Tuesday no carrier in the city wanted to take her to prison. “Transporters are threatened that if they go to UNPACU headquarters they will take away their transportation,” she said.

“What José Daniel is going through in prison, his assassins are the ones who know, we are going to leave from here and we are fine, healthy, if they arrest us, if they fine us or take us to jail, as has happened on other occasions, I blame the government,” he said.

For his part, Pedro López, father-in-law of Roxana García Lorenza, sister of political prisoner Andy García, explained that Nelva’s situation is very critical, “she has her father and mother sick with cancer, so she cannot leave the child with anyone. , because the people she counts on are her parents and they are both sick”.

López, who with his family has formed a support group for the mothers of Cuban political prisoners, said that the high sentences for the protesters were calculated by the government and part of a dark plan.

“They put those sentences of more than 20 years for then in the appeals to remove some years in prison, and thus make the mothers happy, but it has not been like that, and they are all realizing it,” he said.

The relative of Andy García sent a message to the mothers, fathers, cousins, grandparents, brothers and uncles of the detainees during the direct: “You are their voices, the more you keep silent, the more cruel the dictatorship will be. Reporting is not a crime, they are the ones who are committing the crime, the government. They, as criminals that they are, operate in the dark, ”he sentenced.

During the broadcast, the mother of Orlando Carvajal, one of the young prisoners for his participation in the massive protests of July last year in La Güinera, also spoke.

Marilyn Cabrera had been silent all this time waiting for the government’s justice, but she did not find it and has tried to make the case of her 20-year-old son visible.

Carvajal was initially sentenced to 20 years in prison, but during the appeal the sentence was reduced to 12 years, still excessive for the young man, says his mother.

Orlando is “a pretty good boy, even the head of the prison has told me, he says he has no problems with anyone,” Marilyn told CubaNet.

However, Cabrera reported that an officer named Despaigne threatens to throw his son off the third floor.
