Memes, whips with bells on the end… against the regime

Memes

Havana Cuba. – “We study and work like this, so that the Revolution has its hotels like this”, is what it says in a meme circulating on social networkswhere two opposite images are shown.

In the first, the darkness of our daily lives, the blackouts; in the second, a fully illuminated hotel. And not just any hotel, but the recently opened super-luxury Grand Aston, built in the midst of the pandemic, while in Cuba “those of us from below” survived —and still continue to survive— thanks to donations and remittances.

But they say the “experts” of the regime that the construction of hotels is something “normal” in the international arena, and in truth there is no room to doubt such a statement. However, for their own good they should not go around publishing these things because, as someone out there has asked, what is not “normal” in the world, is why in Cuba, if doctors study for six years they earn less than a policeman who only studies three months.

Thus we could, almost ad infinitum, ask ourselves similar questions that do not require any answer to understand that our country, due to the devastating effects of a communist regime entrenched in power for more than half a century, does not admit comparison with any other place in the world. planet.

We know the answers to the obviously rhetorical question about the salaries of doctors and policemen, however it has been widely answered on social networks because, with a simple contrast, it describes how absurd, crude and perverse is the reality that has been imposed on us by force of repression and failed economic and social experiments (or perhaps not so failed, and then in that “success” that they would be hiding from us in a very clumsy way, there would be even more perversity).

There is in cyberspace, in addition to the “self-memes” and jokes generated by the “first lady” (who, due to her posts on Twitter, could be about to be declared by her husband as the number one enemy of the “Continuity ”), other “very serious” jokes that have gone viral precisely because, like the previous examples, they have been able to make us translate into a smile what many of us think with anger from the purest satiety.

Because we are aware of who is to blame for so much misery but, furthermore, that this time our situation will not improve one iota, not only because we do not find signs of improvement anywhere, but because the regime’s figurines, among them the illustrious Minister of EconomyThey are shamelessly yelling it in our face in every television intervention when they say things like “profits are excessive”, “inflation is imported”, MLC stores are “here to stay” or that prices will go down! when there is production!

Production in a country that is running out of labor due to low birth rates and recurring waves of migration? Inflation “imported” when Marino Murillo himself, former “czar of reforms”, said that it was an expected negative effect during this financial trap that has actually been the Ordering Task?

And all this – including the nonsense – is what they say publicly, what they have been authorized to tell us, so that I do not even want to imagine the bad news that is kept for them.

No matter how hard they try to justify the unjustifiable with gibberish and Power Point graphics (and precisely for that reason ridiculous), the rain of memes and ridicule does not stop because, deprived of resources to face them, we only have sarcasm, the joke that although , sometimes they look a lot like resignation, in reality they are not little when you know how to use them well, like a whip with bells on the end, as José Martí said.

The mediocre fears mockery so much that in the face of laughter or something that resembles it, they become clumsy and, consequently, vulnerable, although also, at times, more dangerous. So the bells of these times, which hopefully are final and definitive, must be made of steel and with sharp points, so that in no way do they seem caresses when struck.
