Madrid Spain.- The Cuban Government inaugurated this Wednesday the II International Fair of Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency, in order to seek financing from foreign companies to make investments aimed at achieving energy independence.

“Cuba aspires to achieve energy independence from fossil fuels and the solution is to use renewable energies throughout society, be it the industrial or residential sector,” said the director of Renewable Energies of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), Rosell Guerra. .

According to the Cuban authorities, the country intends to generate electricity through wind farms, photovoltaic or bioelectric plants from forest biomass or sugar cane.

During the first day of the event, which takes place at Pabexpo and will last until June 24, the Minister of Energy and Mines of Cuba, Liván Arronte, and the French ambassador in Havana, Patrice Paoli, signed a cooperation agreement with the objective of accelerating the development of renewable energies in Cuba.

As reported by Arronte through Twitter, The agreement included the installation of nine photovoltaic parks for a power of 50 megawatts.

For his part, the head of International Relations and Collaboration of MINEM, Ariel Orta, told Latin Pressthat the projects with France seek to strengthen relations between the ministry and the French agency in order to increase the participation of renewable energy sources in the Cuban energy matrix.

Orta pointed out that “a feasibility study is planned for prospecting for wind resources in the eastern provinces of the island.”

“Cuba has electrified more than 99% of the country, but there are areas where it is necessary to replace or change the points of light. Hence the importance of these collaborations”, he highlighted.

Companies and experts from countries such as Spain, Italy, Slovakia, China, Japan, India, Panama and Costa Rica participate in the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency event.

The regime is holding this fair in the midst of the energy crisis that Cuba is going through, which has worsened since last May and from which Cubans are suffering constant blackouts of more than eight hours.

During the last months, the Electric Union of Cuba (UNE) has reported more than 300 breakdowns in the country’s thermoelectric plants.
