1868 – TYPEWRITER. American inventor and politician Christopher Sholes
receives the patent for the first commercial typewriter. He also invented the QWERTY keyboard that is used today.

1935 – CARLOS GARDEL. The tango singer-songwriter Carlos Gardel, nicknamed “El zorzal criollo” sings for the last time in a special audition on Radio La Voz de Medellín, the Colombian city where he would die on June 24, 1935 in the crash of his plane with another aircraft when was going to take off from the Olaya Herrera airport.

1961 – ANTARCTIC TREATY. The Antarctic Treaty entered into force, signed by twelve countries, including Argentina, in order to preserve Antarctica as a continent for peace and science.

1968 – GATE 12. 71 Boca fans are crushed to death and another 113 are injured in the “Tragedy of Gate 12” of the Monumental stadium, at the end of the match that River Plate and Boca Juniors equaled 0-0. It is the biggest catastrophe in the history of Argentine football. It was never clear why gate 12 was closed at the end of the game, so the pressure of the crowd leaving the stadium caused the tragedy.

1972 – ZINEDINE ZIDANE. The former soccer player and technical director Zinedine Zidane, considered the best European player of the last 50 years, was born in the French city of Marseille. With the French national team he was champion of Europe and the 1998 World Cup. As coach of Real Madrid he won several Spanish league titles and the Champions League.

1976 – PAOLA SUÁREZ. The former tennis player Paola Suárez, one of the best doubles players in the history of that sport, was born in the Buenos Aires city of Pergamino. Suárez won 44 tournaments of the Association of Women Tennis Players.

1992 – ELTON-JOHN. British singer-songwriter Elton John launches the album The One in the United States, number 23 of his successful career. The disc contains eleven songs in which the famous guitarists David Gilmour and Eric Clapton play.

1993 – OLYMPIC MUSEUM. The Olympic Museum is inaugurated in the Swiss city of Lausanne, where pieces related to the history of sports and the Olympic movement are exhibited.

2012 – MILLIONAIRE RETURN. River Plate returns to the First Division by becoming champion of the B Nacional with a 2-0 victory against Almirante Brown, with goals from David Trezeguet in a match played at the Monumental stadium.

2016- PEACE IN COLOMBIA. The Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the oldest guerrilla group in Latin America, agree in Havana on a cessation of hostilities to put an end to a conflict that had lasted 52 years.

2022 – WIDOWS DAY. World Widows Day is celebrated, instituted in 2010 by the United Nations Organization in order to give a voice to women who have lost their husband and promote their rights and the special support they need. It is estimated that almost one in ten widows lives in extreme poverty.

2022 – OLYMPIC DAY. Throughout the world, Olympic Day is celebrated, proclaimed and celebrated for the first time in 1948 by the International Olympic Committee in commemoration of the date of its creation in 1894.
