Rafael Paz: Government lied about job recovery

Rafael Paz: Gobierno mintió sobre recuperación de empleos

The member of the Political Directorate of the People’s Force, Rafael Paz, assured that government chaired by Luis Abinader has not told the truth about the jobs that have been recovered as a result of the crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The Government lied to the Dominican Republic, stating that they had recovered jobs from the pandemic. What there has been is a gap between the jobs that existed at that time and those that are available, of more than 10,000 jobs that have not been recovered,” pointed out.

He deplored that the Ministry of Labor insists on presenting as truth, since last December 2021, the total recovery of pre-pandemic jobs when in reality this has not been fulfilled, as evidenced by the last quarterly bulletin of the continuous survey of labor force of the Central Bank of the Republic.

“Similarly, emphasize the fact that the economically active population has been growing. Since they have not yet been recovered pandemic jobs, what has increased is unemployment, which went from 5.7 percent to 6.4 percent,” he pointed out.

Interviewed on the Telematutino 11 program by journalists Ramón Núñez Ramírez and Jacqueline Morel, Paz emphasized the fact that there has been a significant increase in informality.

He recalled that in recent years the trend of the Dominican economy had been towards formalization. “That trend has been broken. Today the creation of jobs in the informal sector exceeds the creation of jobs in the formal sector by more than 25 thousand jobs with respect to the other”, said.

He regretted that, as a result of informality, there are people who do not have social protection or medical insurance, and who cannot provide for themselves. “All of this is generating systemic problems,” she said.

He said that «All this added to a reduction of 3.83 percent of the real income of Dominicans, has generated that 400 thousand people have gone into poverty in the last two years.

“Which implies that the figures that the economic growth figures that are exhibited have been at the cost of sending many people into poverty and without generating enough jobs, especially in the field where there has been a real loss of employment of around of 8 percent of agricultural workers from the Dominican Republic“, he explained.
