Parlasur and European delegation demand an end to the use of force in Ukraine

The joint communiqué of the Presidents of the MERCOSUR Parliament and the Delegation of the European Parliament for relations with MERCOSUR establishes the following: «On June 20, the Delegation of the European Parliament for relations with Mercosur and the Board of Directors of the Parliament of Mercosur ( PARLASUR) we have held an inter-parliamentary meeting in which we have exchanged points of view on different aspects of the bilateral relationship, with special reference to the Mercosur-European Union Association Agreement.

In the first place, we want to underline the importance and opportunity of a meeting of these characteristics, as a useful instrument for deepening the political, economic, social and human relations of the peoples of both regions, and we commit ourselves to doing everything possible to maintain a regular cadence of contacts and to work towards common objectives. We reiterate the value of intraregional and interregional integration agreements, oriented towards a general objective of progress and sustainable development, as engines for revitalizing and strengthening political dialogue and post-war recovery. -pandemic, and as drivers of job creation, business opportunities and investment.

In this sense, we agree on the need for the relationship between our regions to be established at the highest level and to regulate the broad spectrum of our relationships in all areas. For this reason, we consider it essential to approve, as soon as possible, an association agreement between the European Union and Mercosur that is ambitious, equitable and balanced. Hence, we urge the competent authorities to send without delay to the decision-making bodies of our respective regions a final text of the Association Agreement concluded in June 2019 for discussion and approval.

On the other hand, we wish to highlight our willingness to intensify our cooperation to tackle the fight against climate change and the loss of biodiversity as an absolute priority for both regions, as well as the need to promote a true transformation of our societies and economies to be fairer, more sustainable and more resilient, in compliance with the provisions of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement on climate change, among others.

Finally, we reaffirm the commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, and demand that the Russian Federation immediately cease the use of force against Ukraine, withdraw all its military forces from the territory of that country and to guarantee respect for human rights and international humanitarian law. Likewise, we show our solidarity with the people who have suffered the effects of the war in Ukraine and our appreciation for all the people and organizations that have provided help to Ukrainian citizens who have been victims of this war. We commit to work together to mitigate as far as possible the consequences that this conflict is having for our societies, such as the energy, supply and food crisis. MP Tomas Bittar President of the MERCOSUR Parliament June 20, 2022″»
