Basilio Guzmán, shot dead while picking up a newspaper at the entrance of his house in the Los Cerros de Gurabo sector, in the province Santiagostood out as an aggressive lawyer in Civil matters.
Among the cases that he handled in the exercise of his profession, those of foreclosure and loans stand out.
Currently, the deceased jurist was carrying out a controversial process over the dispute over land valued at hundreds of millions of pesos in the municipal district of Jacagua, in the province Santiago.
In addition, Basilio Guzmán excelled as a professor at the Open University for Adults (UAPA).
The legal professional was shot dead on Tuesday morning in front of his house. Witnesses said that two men arrived on a motorcycle and shot him several times while he was picking up a newspaper.
Colleagues in the exercise of Basilio Guzmán showed up at the scene of the event when they heard the news.
“The National Police and the Public Ministry have a great challenge with this fact so that the exercise of the right is not proliferated in fear that they are going to take their lives,” said José Miguel Minier.
Lawyer Juan Carlos Ortiz described the crime as a challenge to the authorities.
He indicated that lawyers cannot remain with their arms crossed in the face of the high levels of crime that affect the nation.
“We cannot cede the space we have gained to crime,” Ortiz said.
He asked the legal professionals to collaborate with the authorities, to face this scourge.
Monchy Estrella, president of the Association of Lawyers in Santiagocondemned the lawyer’s crime.
He demanded from the police authorities and the Public Ministry an exhaustive investigation to clarify the fact.
He considers that with the shooting death of Basilio Guzmán it is evident that the plans against violence and security implemented by the Central Government have failed.
