Winter starts today and should be influenced by La Niña

Temperatures rise a little, but cold remains over the weekend

Coldest period of the year, winter starts today (21) at 6:14 am in the Southern Hemisphere. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) expects three months with above-average rainfall in the North and Northeast regions, due to the La Niña phenomenon. The season ends on September 22 at 10:04 pm (Brasilia time). Winter starts today and should be influenced by La Niña

opposite to El Niñothe phenomenon La Niña is mainly characterized by the record of below-average temperatures on the surface of the part of the Pacific Ocean that is close to the Equator, which affects the climate in South America. In Brazil, among the most common effects is increased precipitation and river flow in the North and reduced rainfall in the South.

In addition to more rains, Inmet predicts that the North Region will have higher temperatures. The exceptions are the south of Pará and Tocantins, where the warmer climate must be accompanied by below-average rainfall, which increases the chances of forest fires in the south of the Amazon.

In the Center-West region, dry and hot air masses should also favor forest fires, mainly in the months of August and September. Winter should intensify the dry period, and the trend is for a decrease in relative humidity in the coming months, with daily values that can be below 30%, and minimum peaks below 20%.

Dry weather

The drier than average weather should mark the winter in the South Region, in addition to temperatures close to and below average with the arrival of polar air masses, mainly between July and August. The west of these three states, however, can have above-average rainfall, and the north of Paraná should have a warmer winter than usual.

In the Northeast, above-average rainfall should fall on the coast, while in the west of Bahia and in the south of Piauí and Maranhão, rainfall may be close to average. La Niña is also expected to force temperatures close to or above average across much of the region.

The Southeast may have slightly below average rainfall, but the passage of cold fronts should continue to cause rain on the coast. Regarding the temperature, the forecast is that it will remain above average, but polar air masses can determine the formation of frost in regions of high altitude.
