MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban journalist María Matienzo created this Monday a fundraiser on the gofundme.com platform to pay for the headphones that would allow her niece, a three-year-old girl, to listen.
Matienzo explained that his niece, who is a twin with another baby, was born after a difficult delivery. “She, of the two, was the one who suffered the most. She spent a month in therapy. The medicines that saved his life – Amikacin and Vancomycin – caused hearing impairment due to intoxication”, he detailed.
“We found out very early. He did not respond to sound stimuli as his brother did. Since she was six months old we have been trying to make sure that she is not the ‘poor little girl’ in the family. She is already almost three years old and although she is a very sociable and intelligent girl, she still does not speak because the devices she uses generate a lot of noise and she can hardly identify the sounds”, she also explained.
According to Matienzo, thanks to a friend, the family was able to find a clinic in Spain who sells the hearing aids that her niece Patricia needs, which can be calibrated according to the girl’s hearing needs.
“Thanks to this friend we have also reached an agreement on the price but we continue to have an economic problem. Phonak and Oticón hearing aids in the standard range cost 2,500 euros,” explained Matienzo.
“For Patricia to one day be able to listen and speak as her brother does, I have no choice but to ask for help from all my friends who want to help me. Sadly, with our work, we did not even come close to this figure, ”she lamented.
Finally, the Cuban asked for help even if it was by sharing the fundraising link.
