Samuel Eto’o, former Cameroonian soccer player for FC Barcelona, He was sentenced this Monday to 22 months in prison, that he will not have to comply by admitting his guilt in four crimes of tax fraud, the justice reported.

Eto’o, currently president of the Cameroon Federation, He was sentenced by a Barcelona court “to 22 months in prison for four crimes against the tax administration,” court sources told AFP.

In Spain, sentences of less than two years they do not entail entry to prison.

Also, the one that was companion of Lionel Messi in the forward of the Barça will have to return the almost four million euros (4.2 dollars) defrauded, along with his representative at the time, José María Mesalles, and pay a fine of an unspecified amount, which Spanish media placed at 1.8 million euros.

Contacted by AFP, Treasury did not want to comment on the news.

As it happened to Messi, Eto’o was accused of maneuvering to pay less taxes on the income generated by the assignment of their image rights, between 2006 and 2009.

While he played for Barcelona, with whom he won three leagues, one cup, two Spanish Super Cups and two UEFA Champions Leagues, Eto’o, 41, would have avoided paying 3.9 million euros of taxes.

“The footballer pretended that such rights had been transferred to two companies residents respectively in Hungary and Spain, with the aim of fraudulently reducing their taxation”, affirmed documents from the prosecutor’s office consulted by AFP when the case broke.

Eto’o, with the Barça club until his transfer to Inter Milan in 2009, was actually the rights holder of image yielded, according to the accusation.

Thus, Eto’o joins the list of great players in the Spanish league that they ended up having problems with the Treasury, like Messi, the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, the Argentinian Javier Mascherano or the Chilean Alexis Sánchez.

They all ended up pacts with the prosecution similar to that of Eto’o.
