The Sales for the celebration of Father’s Day rose 1.4% compared to 2021and the items of clothing and cell phones stood out for being the most requested, according to the report of the Argentine Confederation of Medium-sized Enterprises (CAME).

“Smaller products were sold than last year and in many families the gift was the trip for the long weekend”pointed out CAME, which calculated an average spending ticket of $6,880.

Regarding the promotions launched by businesses, CAME specified that they “helped sustain sales” linked to this celebration.

They indicated that “although the growth rate was discreet, 66% of the surveyed businesses considered that their sales were equal to or better than expected.”

In addition, 61.3% of businesses targeting this date made some discount, gift or offered payment facilities, seeking to prevent price increases from discouraging demand.

In general terms, sales “began to move on Thursday, slowed down on Friday with the holiday and regained strength from Saturday morning, with many purchases around closing time,” CAME said.

In addition, the average sales receipt for the year was $6,880, with the lowest amount in Bookstores ($2,926) and the highest in Appliances, household items and audio and video equipment ($12,834).

While, “The strong tourist movement subtracted sales from retail, because in many families the gift was the trip, which at the same time, allowed to boost sectors such as gastronomy, hotels and services related to recreation and culture”according to the report.

By items, in the annual comparison, the item that recorded the highest growth was Clothing (+7%), followed by Peripheral equipment, accessories and cell phones (+6%), Cosmetics and Perfumeries (+4%) and Appliances, household items and audio and video equipment (+1%), while sales in bookstores (-7%) and in Footwear and leather goods (-6%) fell this year.

In the case of the Clothing category, which grew 7.4% in the annual comparison, with an average receipt of $6,228, what was distinctive about the year was that “unlike other years, there were not many promotions in this category, and only 53.1% of the stores applied some, but 71.9% of the surveyed businessmen indicated that it was the same or better than expected, and the cold turned families to opt for gifts such as sweatshirts, jackets, shirts, long-sleeved shirts, hats, gloves and scarves,” they explained.

Also, most sales were made with cards, and customers took advantage of installments when available.

In the case of cell phones, accessories and peripheral equipment, on the other hand, an annual increase of 6% was observed with an average receipt of $5,511.

In this regard, the CAME survey shows that “only 55.6% of businesses indicated that their sales in this area were the same or better than in 2021, with a high proportion of negative responses (44.4%), due to that sales moved very subject to the promotions applied by two-thirds of the businesses in the sector, mainly discounts for payment in cash and promotions and fees with some cards, and in the smaller cities there were places that opted for raffles to attract the public.

Among the items that registered decreases compared to 2021, were Bookstores and Footwear and leather goods.

In the first case, bookstores, a decline of 6.8% per year (at constant prices) was observed and the average ticket was the lowest of the items measured ($2,926), although “beyond the result, 76.2% of the businesses surveyed indicated that their sales met or exceeded previous expectations, because although in the days prior to this celebration less was sold than last year, it helped reactivate the sector”.

Likewise, “some businessmen explained that electronic commerce was very active throughout the month, possibly sustained by advance purchases for the date”they indicated.

For its part, Footwear and leather goods had a drop of 5.5% annually (at constant prices) and the average ticket was $7,043.

The indicator used by CAME measures the evolution of the turnover of SME businesses that carry out their activity within the country and are more representative to measure this special date, with a total national sample of approximately 200 cases, from 22 provinces and CABA.
