Academics linked to the center-right and former Concertación published a “constitutional manifesto” where they insist on a “third way”

Academics from the former Coalition, together with representatives linked to the business world and the center right, continue with their campaign in favor of Rejection for the exit plebiscite. In line with this objective, the group released a text called “Constitutional Manifesto. An Alternative Constitution for Chile”, a document in which they explain a series of reforms that would be necessary in the event that the citizenry repudiates the proposal of the Constituent Convention.

In the text, the signatories express their dissatisfaction with the constitutional process that is about to finish its work. Given this, they propose an alternative constitutional path in the event that the Rejection option wins in the plebiscite on September 4.

“In October 2020, a clear majority approved the preparation of a proposal for a New Constitution. In the final stage of this process, we have come to the conviction that the draft prepared by the Constitutional Convention is far from attracting the broad citizen consensus that a Fundamental Charter requires. Neither is it feasible or convenient for the current Constitution to remain unchanged,” they indicated.

They also added that “a plebiscitary rejection should open the way to another higher stage of the constituent process, which leads to the elaboration of a Charter that rescues the criteria and norms of the different projects and recent constitutional views, without putting at risk the essential elements and the stability of the democratic republic. The main commitment of the signatories is the change from a subsidiary state to a social state of law.

The signatories did not stop there, since they made a constitutional proposal where they addressed issues such as: organization of the state; political and government regime; rights and freedoms, civil rights and economic, social and cultural rights; and protection of nature.

Among the signatories are: Jaime Arancibia Mattar, Soledad Alvear Valenzuela, Soledad Bertelsen Simonetti, Gladys Camacho Cepeda, Jaime Campos Quiroga, Jorge Correa Sutil, Sofía Correa Sutil, Gonzalo García Palominos, Soledad Krause Muñoz, Zarko Luksic Sandoval, José Ignacio Martínez Estay , Pilar Peña D’Ardaillon, Marcela Peredo Rojas, Sandra Ponce de León, Cecilia Rosales Rigol and Eduardo Saffirio Suárez.
