Nelson said that “as the Ortega-Murillo regime becomes increasingly involved with Russia and continues to fill its coffers with significant revenues exploited from the Nicaraguan gold sector, the regime has turned its back on the Nicaraguan people, neglecting their means of subsistence.”

Previously, the Treasury Department sanctioned two Ortega servants who ran the company: Ramón Humberto Calderón Vindell in January 2022 and Francisco “Chico” López Centeno in July 2018.
Daniel Ortega’s regime nationalized fugitives from justice Ebal Diaz Y Ricardo Cardona, accused of committing acts of corruption during the mandate of Juan Orlando Hernández, former president of Honduras who was extradited to the United States on charges related to drug trafficking. Commissioner Fidel Domínguez, known as “the assassin of León,” attacked construction workers who were demanding their labor rights in that city.
