Jhumiler Sánchez climbs the coffee podium

Paraguay continues to add medals at the international level in different disciplines, Jhumiler Sánchez won two medals in Colombia, while getting ready for the Asu2022 South American Games, which will take place in our capital from October 1 to 15.

In athletics, the speed race is a discipline that has a maximum distance of 400 meters on tracks. A sprinting athlete is called a sprinter. In this type of race, the sprinter at the start is semi-incorporated on supports fixed to the track called “cleats”; thus, runners gain traction by pushing their feet against these studs placed behind the starting line.

At the sound of the starter’s shot, the athlete launches onto the track and runs at maximum speed towards the finish line, a quick start being essential.

Jhumiler Sánchez is an athlete from the Paraguayan Sports Elite, he is 17 years old and is from the city of Caaguazú. He is Absolute National Champion, South American Medalist and was participating in the International Grand Prix in Ibague, Colombia, category U20. In this competition, the Paraguayan athlete won two medals, one silver and one bronze. He graciously provides us with details of what his experience was like.

What sensations did you have?
I felt very good in this competition, it was a nice experience, I got two podiums for Paraguay. In the 200 meters flat I achieved second place, in the 400 meters I reached third place. I have been training full time for two years, I dedicate myself 100% to this sport. Thank God I have a family that supports me a lot, they are constantly supporting me in this process, I am very grateful to my parents, it is a privilege that they are always accompanying me in my sport”.

How did you get into the world of athletics?
It all started in the pandemic, before that I played soccer but since everything stopped and to be in rhythm I got into athletics until they invited me to a competition where I participated, I won and from there I stayed.

How about the level of the Colombian Grand Prix?
Very strong, they are all very good, they are more than 1.80 and 1.85 meters tall, really, the level is very high, it is not easy to compete against foreigners, they are very well prepared.

How much did this participation help you watching the Asu2022 Games?
I am in a very good process now, having gone to Colombia to compete was a great help to be able to have more experience in competing with foreign athletes.

In the 200 meters I ran 21 seconds and 56 hundredths against a negative wind of 1.9 and won the bronze medal along with the two best from Colombia. In the 400 I did 48 seconds and 70 hundredths.

What do these medals mean to you?
It is my first international medal in the Grand Prix and it is the first time that I leave Paraguay achieving these two medals, very happy, happy and grateful with the work that my coach Rodi Chávez from the city of Caaguazú and here in Asunción gives me. Edgar Galeano.

What does the Asu2022 South American Games mean to you?
It is a great incentive to continue fighting day by day, to continue striving to leave Paraguay well up. The Games will be a great event and it is a privilege to be held in our country.Jhumiler Sánchez climbs the coffee podium
