ECLAC and the International Labor Organization (ILO) released a new report yesterday in which they point out that, while the region’s economies grew 6.6% in 2021, the region’s labor indicators also registered improvements, among which stand out the employment and the participation rate, and the decrease in unemployment.
However, the job recovery has been slow, incomplete and uneven.
In the report, both organizations highlight that by the end of 2021 several of the countries had recovered their level of GDP prior to the crisis, while that of employment, in many cases, was still below.
According to the report, after the fall in the number of employed persons in the region during 2020 (8.2%), in 2021 there was a significant recovery, which was from 6.8% between the fourth quarter of the year and the same period of 2021. However, despite the increase, only from the fourth quarter of 2021 did the number of employed people reach the level recorded at the end of 2019.
That yes, the labor gaps between men and women they deepened in 2021, and although there has been an improvement in both, the recovery for them has been faster.
