MIAMI, United States. — The Opponent Juan Francisco Sigler Amaya is one of the visible faces of the Sigler Amaya family, recognized on the island for its activism for human rights and in favor of political prisoners.
Based in the Matanzas municipality of Pedro Betancourt, the dissident told CubaNet passages of the trajectory of his family, marked by the reprisals of the Cuban regime and the persecution of the State Security.
Juan Francisco Sigler Amaya is the son of Gloria Amaya González, mother of fellow peaceful opponents Ariel, Guido and Miguel.
The opponent reminded this newspaper of episodes of repression by the political police against the family. It happened on January 22, 2000. That day, the Sigler Amaya house was raided by agents of the political police during a vigil in favor of political prisoners.
Years later, Ariel and Guido Sigler Amaya were sentenced to 20 years in prison during the wave of repression unleashed by Fidel Castro in 2003, also known as Black Spring.
Sigler Amaya points out that his family opposed the Castro regime from the very beginning of the 1959 Revolution. Since then, they have had to pay the price of defending the right to freedom.
Juan Francisco assured CubaNet that the country is suffering the effects of decades of an obsolete political-economic model that has only spawned more poverty and inequality.
In this sense, the opponent maintains that the economic crisis and the scarcity suffered by the population is a consequence of the mismanagement of the island’s regime.
