Pedro Castillo went to the Prosecutor's Office of Peru to be questioned for alleged corruption

Castillo arrived on foot at the headquarters of the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office escorted by a large police contingent, while a group of protesters criticized him

The president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, went this Friday, June 17, to the Prosecutor’s Office of his country to be questioned about an alleged case of corruption that occurred during his administration, related to the Tarata III Bridge. The appointment was scheduled for the 12th, but was rescheduled at the request of the president’s defense.

Before going to the headquarters of the Public Ministry to give statements to the attorney general, Pablo Sánchez said on his social networks that he would go in order to “clarify the complaints and speculations” that, according to him, are against him. This is the second time that he has been called to this instance so far in his mandate.

Castillo walked to the headquarters of the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office, protected by a strong security contingent while a group of demonstrators protested against his administration. After the president entered the building, a brawl broke out between his detractors and his supporters.

Pedro Castilo began to provide his statements in strict privacy as part of the investigation of the concession for the construction of a bridge in the country’s Amazon, which the Prosecutor’s Office considers could have been granted to an alleged criminal organization entrenched in the current Executive.

On May 29, the Prosecutor’s Office of Peru decided to expand the investigation against Castillo for alleged corruption.

There was already a case against the president that was opened in early January 2022. There, the then attorney general of Peru, Zoraida Ávalos, announced a preliminary investigation against the president for alleged crimes related to corruption such as the Puente Tarata III concession, the acquisition of Biodiesel B100 to supply Petroperú and military promotions, the latter that caused the departure of two members of his cabinet.

The case of the Tarata III bridge, to which Castillo was included, is linked to the former Minister of Transportation, Juan Silva, and six congressmen from the Popular Action caucus and former Minister Bruno Pacheco, after the statement of the businesswoman Karelim López.

López accused the president and his closest entourage, including several nephews, of having formed an alleged criminal network to illegally award contracts and works in the State.
