“We are exhausted and enduring the blow”: mothers regulated by the regime speak

Madres, Cuba, Presos políticos, 11J

MEXICO CITY, Mexico. — Liset Fonseca, mother of Roberto Pérez Fonseca, and Marta Perdomo, mother of Jorge and Nadir Martín Perdomo, were denied leaving the country this afternoon. The mothers of three of the political prisoners of July 11 (11J) had been invited to Spain by the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH).

At the José Martí international airport in Havana, after dispatching their bags, they were detained at Immigration. There, an official took their documentation and made them wait about 30 minutes to then inform them that they could not travel, Liset Fonseca explained to CubaNet.

“She only told us that we were regulated and that she did not know why,” said the mother.

The category of “regulated” is used arbitrarily by the Cuban regime to impede the freedom of movement of citizens. In addition to medical specialists and other professionals, the dictatorship prevents activists and journalists from leaving in retaliation for their dissidence and work.

Alberto Ortega Fonseca, Liset’s youngest son, who lives in Canada, is traveling to Madrid with the intention of seeing his mother for the first time in eight years. When he lands he will learn that she was never able to board the flight.

In Europe, both mothers would meet with members of parliament and would also travel to Geneva, where the headquarters of the United Nations Organization (UN) is located. The objective of the trip was to denounce and make visible the situation of political prisoners in Cuba.

At the close of this note, Marta and Liset remained at the airport waiting for their bags to be returned. “We are exhausted and enduring one more blow. Add to that that the luggage does not appear and they rally us, “said Fonseca.

Robert Perez FonsecaLiset’s eldest son, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for demonstrating on July 11 and breaking a painting of Fidel Castro. Martha’s children Jorge and Nadir are serving sentences of eight and six years in prison, respectively.
