Senate approves compensation law for former Itaipu workers

It is about the bill “Which recognizes as historical compensation, labor benefits to former workers, original workers, builders, direct contractors, contractors and subcontractors of works, landlords and sub-locators of services and health and education agreements, of the Itaipu power plant, right bank”, presented by senators Abel González, Gilberto Apuril, Miguel Fulgencio Rodríguez and Enrique Riera.

One of the legislators who expressed her opposition was Senator Desirée Masi, who, on behalf of the Legislation, Finance and Health Commissions, argued for the rejection of the project, indicating that Itaipu’s funds cannot be used for other purposes because they do not is established in the Treaty.

For his part, Senator Fernando Lugo, spokesman for the Accounts and Control Commission, stated that this legislative instance ruled for the approval of the aforementioned project, alleging that justice should be done with our compatriots. He added that, with the regulations, it is intended to provide an appropriate legal framework for the fulfillment of labor rights and historical compensation for the people who worked in the construction of the hydroelectric plant.

Likewise, Senator Enrique Riera, who argued that it is a human right and that these people have been fighting for 30 years for the claim so that their claims are compensated. He added that the approval of this law is intended to give a political message.

It should be clarified that the document obtained modifications from the section, remaining as follows: “That establishes the legal framework for the payment of historical compensation, to former workers, builders of the Plant, assembly and commissioning of Itaipu’s generating units , directly hired by contractors and subcontractors of works, landlords and sub-locators of services and health and education agreements, from the Right Bank.

The document was drafted with 16 articles and was approved with modifications. It was sent to the Chamber of Deputies for its study.
