Venezuelans and Colombians, the main asylum seekers in Spain

In his report on refugees in Spain and Europe for 2022, the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (Cear), reveals that since 2019 the numbers of asylum seekers are headed by people from Colombian and Venezuelan nationality.

Despite leading asylum applications since 2019, the trend in the profile of applicants has changed and they are no longer individuals but of people with extended family groups. In contrast, requests for people of African origin mainly alone.

According to CEAR, Colombians and Venezuelans who request asylum for humanitarian reasons have been falling, going from 97% (2020) to 82% (2021). The other nationalities seeking asylum are from countries such as Morocco, Mali, Senegal, Peru, Honduras, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nicaragua.

The report also highlights the decrease in the percentage of protection resolutions for humanitarian reasons for applicants from Venezuela, falling from 97% in 2020 to 82% in 2021.

The CEO of Cear, Estrella Galánhighlighted that in the last year they received 65,404 applications, 64% were men, 36% were women and considered worrying that 15% of petitions are from minors.

Galán criticized that the same model of reception of the Ukrainians is not being applied to the other people who arrive on the continent, since in 24 hours these refugees receive international protection.

In the last year, Europe received 630,630 applications for international protection and the main host countries were Germany (190,545), France (120,685) and Spain (65,404).
