The Government affirms that the Omicron variant can be detected in Bolivia

The coronavirus and its different variants puts the whole world in trouble. This time the planet’s concern is for the Omicron variant, a new strain that was initially detected in African countries and then proliferated in other continents until reaching South America.

In Bolivia there is still no confirmation of any positive case of this new strain; However, the authorities affirm that the National Institute of Health Laboratories (Inlasa) has the capacity to detect this new virus.

María Renee Castro, Vice Minister of Promotion, Epidemiological Surveillance and Traditional Medicine, told EL DUTY that the country is prepared to detect and combat this new strain, through the Inlasa scientific team.

“In the Inlasa all kinds of variants are detected, including the Ómicron, which is worrying the world,” said Castro. this Thursday night. The authority indicated that there is a protocol to proceed with the detection of this new strain as soon as the first suspect is found.

Regarding the amounts of PCR or nasal antigen tests that can be used In this fourth wave, which has not yet reached the highest peak of infections, Castro said that the population should not worry because both the public and social security systems have thousands of tests available.

On this subject, Alma Morales, representative of the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) in Bolivia stressed that the country is prepared to detect the presence of the Omicron variant because cuengages with modern genomic sequencing equipment at Inlasa.

Morales remarked that until now it is not known exactly, what is the way in which the variant will behave, that is, it will have greater transmission or will generate more serious forms of the disease, so he insisted that it is important not to alarm the population with the effects of a virus mutation that is still unknown and the reaction it generates.

According to the official site of the WHO, on November 26, 2021 and following the advice of the Technical Advisory Group on the Evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus in English, classified variant B.1.1.529 of this virus as a worrying variant. In addition, he decided to name it with the Greek letter Ómicron.

The decision to consider this variant of concern was based on the evidence presented to the Technical Advisory Group, which indicates that it has several mutations That could affect the characteristics of the virus, for example, how easy it is to spread or the severity of the symptoms it causes.
