“In an operation by the National Civil Police at kilometer 438.5 of the Northern Transversal Strip, in the jurisdiction of Raxruhá in Alta Verapaz, eight people were arrested who were driving the same number of vehicles in which they were transporting 39 undocumented Cuban nationals,” he says. a statement.
The alleged traffickers were arrested and taken to court. While the Cuban migrants received the necessary care and were taken to the Guatemalan Migration Institute (IGM) “to proceed with the corresponding procedures.” The information does not specify whether they will be repatriated.
In a second operation, in the town of Morales, Izabal, were detecteds 47 Cubans, including three minors.
The Caribbean people were traveling to Mexico together with four Ecuadorians in various vehicles irregularly.
The eight drivers of the vehicles, suspected of being human traffickers, were arrested. The nationality of the “coyotes” was not indicated.
The 51 migrants were taken to the headquarters of the Guatemalan Migration Institute to determine their immigration status.

According to the local press, so far this year 697 people of different nationalities have been detained illegally in the Department of Izabal, in the north of the country.
On June 10, the Guatemalan authorities reported that between January 1 and June 9, 2022, some 643 Cubans have been detected in an irregular migratory situation in this Central American country.
