Ortega jailers inflict a "savage beating" on political prisoner Jerling Cruz, family members denounce

Blue and White Monitoring, made up of an interdisciplinary team of members of human rights organizations, denounced that political prisoner Jerling Cruz was savagely beaten by officials from the Waswali Penitentiary System, Matagalpa, where he has been incarcerated for two years.

“We denounce that the political prisoner Jerling Cruz was savagely beaten by officials from the Waswalí Penitentiary System, Matagalpa,” the organization published through its social networks, which in turn demanded “respect for his physical integrity (of Cruz) and the release of all political prisoners.

The young man was beaten on Friday, June 10, while having breakfast, said the defense organization. Cruz was captured on April 23, 2020, when combined Army and Sandinista guard forces assaulted, tortured, and robbed a peasant family in a region of Jinotega.

On May 12, the Blue and White Monitoring also indicated that the political prisoners Emiliano Zeledón, and the brothers Dorling and Oliver Montenegro were victims of beatings by the officials of the Matagalpa Prison, for participating in a hunger strike.

With this initiative, they demanded “the end of torture and their immediate release.” There are 12 Jinotegans who are in the Matagalpa Penitentiary system and who were part of the civic protests. The multidisciplinary body demands that their physical integrity be respected, “because the State of Nicaragua is the guarantor of all political prisoners.”

The jailers have been cruel against the hostages of conscience, since on April 26 they were also exposed to physical torture for raising their voices against cruel treatment. “Relatives of the political prisoners denounce that the young people were brutally beaten in the Waswalí Penitentiary System, after going on a hunger strike demanding an end to the torture and immediate release,” said the organization that defends political prisoners.

In Nicaragua, there are more than 180 political prisoners, of which 14 are women, 44 are people who have been recaptured or detained for the second time.
