IDB Lab call for the use of digital tokens in biodiversity and climate action

Convocatoria de BID Lab para uso de tokens digitales

IDB Lab, the innovation laboratory of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), is making a call to find innovative solutions that make use of the tokens to promote the conservation of biodiversity and promote climate action.

The Call for Innovation tokens digital for biodiversity has the collaboration of Natural Capital Laboratorythe IDB Group’s one-stop shop for promoting financial innovation in natural capital, and with the support of LACChainthe global alliance led by IDB Lab for the development of blockchain in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

The tokens digital, crypto or purely digital assets can become amplifiers of actions that halt and reverse biodiversity loss and promote nature-friendly solutions.

However, the possibilities of these instruments in this field have hardly been explored globally and minimally in LAC, a region that has 40% of the world’s biological diversity, 30% of the drinking water available on earth and almost 50 % of the world’s tropical forests.

IDB Lab, fully aligned with the promotion of actions against climate change established by the Vision 2025 of the IDB Group, launches this call to explore the possibilities of digital tokens and directs it to startups, SMEs, foundations, non-profit organizations, corporations, universities, think tanks, public innovation agencies, accelerators and other organizations with experience in the theme with models ready to be implemented, duly registered and located in one of the 26 IDB borrowing countries.

Organizations from the non-borrowing countries if they do so in association with any of the above.

It is expected to receive proposals that promote the conservation and/or regeneration of biodiversity with a novel solution, of an innovative nature and that makes an appropriate use of technology, paying special consideration to the context, the social and economic inclusion of poor and vulnerable populations, as well as the participation and leadership of local communities in the conservation and management of natural resources.

A second channel of the call seeks solutions that allow raising awareness and creating networks of actors working in the technology industry in the field of biodiversity, as well as favoring inclusive and binding governance protocols for this field of application, including monitoring systems. .

The call will be open until August 12, 2022. The selected proposals will be announced during the month of September 2022 and may receive funding to develop their projects in any of the 26 countries indicated.

They will also be included in the IDB Lab network of global innovators for the exchange of knowledge, experiences and best practices and for the creation of contacts in events organized by the IDB Group and its partners.
