The Ministry of Public Health produced a report in which it is presented the evolution of HIV in the five-year period 2016-2020 and the current epidemiological situation. As significant data stand out the decrease in both cases and deaths from the virus during 2020.
Between 2016 and 2020, the ministry received a average of 902 new HIV cases per year. According to the monitoring survey carried out in 2020, 876 positive cases were found in a total of 213,184 HIV tests performed.
In previous years, there was a trend towards an increase in cases, with 2019 the year with the most cases in the five-year period, counting 993. In 2020 this trend is reversed returning to values similar to those of 2016 in which 856 cases were presented.
As the portfolio report explains, “the decline in 2020 in the number of notifications could be related to the reduction in the number of tests carried out as a result of the covid-19 pandemic, a phenomenon that was also observed in other health events “.
The death rate from causes related to HIV / AIDS in 2020 was the lowest in the last 5 years. The average age of the deceased was 48 years and 74% of them belonged to public health establishments.
Of the 152 deceased, 25 were diagnosed in the same year, already in the AIDS stage, of them 7 suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis, 3 suffering from a disease due to Pneumocystis jiroveci, and the rest due to other diseases, indicates the MSP.
