The president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, reappeared this Saturday in public after recovering from the covid-19 that prevented him from being present at the Summit of the Americas that took place in the United States during this week.

The Uruguayan president attended the friendly soccer match between his country’s team against Panama. Prior to the initial whistle, he presented the coach and the entire team with the flag of Uruguay, which will be present at the World Cup in Qatar to be played in November.

After handing over the National Pavilion, the Uruguayan president posed for photos with the flag alongside his country’s team. And he got ready to enjoy the match in which Uruguay defeated the Central American team 5-0.

This Friday Lacalle Pou called for a “less protectionist” world for the prosperity of the countries of America. This during his remote intervention in the plenary session of the IX Summit of the Americas.

“For our countries to be prosperous, what is needed is an open world, less protectionist. A world of complementation”, commented Lacalle Pou. In addition, he insisted on his idea that “Uruguay wants to open up to the world and needs others to act accordingly.”

The president of the South American country stated that, like other international meetings, Uruguay arrives at this summit “betting on multilateralism.” And “with a firm conviction of a more open world.”

Lacalle Pou, who took office on March 1, 2020 for the 2020-2025 period, stressed that in “a world of uncertainties” like the current one, “the duty of rulers and authorities is to try to generate certainties.” That is why he cited democratic, economic, food and environmental security.
