MIAMI, United States.- The Parliament of the Basque Country, in Spain, approved a resolution against repression in Cuba that demands “scrupulous respect for human rights” in addition to “release all political prisoners.”

According to a note from Radio Television Martithe chamber asked Havana to take “firm and decisive steps in the democratic and economic opening” at the proposal of the Popular (PP) and Citizens (Cs) parties, and with the support of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and the Socialist Party. of Euskadi (PSE).

“Those who demonstrated in July 2021 in the streets and squares of Cuba have suffered and are suffering an ordeal of repression, arrests, imprisonment and unfair trials,” said deputy Carmelo Barrio Baroja, from the group behind the motion.

According to Martí, Txarli Prieto San Vicente, of the PSE, denounced the “violent repression and arbitrary arrests” and demanded “the freedom of demonstrators and of those who are considered political prisoners.”

“And, to move in that direction, it is essential to lift the economic blockade that hinders the country’s development,” he added.

Bildu, political heir of the terrorist group ETA, and Podemos (communists) voted against the resolution.

“We encourage a permanent dialogue with the people who demonstrated peacefully (…), but the context also explains many things. And we are talking about Cuba, a country under attack,” justified deputy Iñigo Martínez Zatón, from Podemos.

The resolution also added two amendments during the negotiation with socialists and nationalists. One asks the United States to “lift the embargo”, and the other asks the Basque government to continue its “policy of dialogue, aid and cooperation with the Cuban people”, two amendments added during the negotiation with socialists and nationalists.

“There were lukewarm postures and others that were very firm. We promoted respect for human rights, the freedom of political prisoners and support for a peaceful transition to democracy. Two more points were included, with which we disagree, but we consider that reaching consensus is more important than the maximum”, said Frank Hidalgo, president of the Cuban-Basque Demokrazia Kubarentzat Association.
