The repatriation of these 64 Cubans, the 21st operation carried out from Mexico this year, was preceded by another return, of 32 undocumented immigrants, from the United States.

The Cubans were returned through the western port of Orozco, in Mariel, in the 36th operation of its kind so far this year from that country and the third in the last week.

The governments of the Bahamas and Mexico have returned to Cuba since January a total of 2,980 people in 69 return operations, official sources have confirmed.

The current exodus of Cubans has skyrocketed since Nicaragua established free visas for residents on the island in November 2021. The lifting of this requirement to travel has rapidly increased the number of Cubans who leave the country through this route with the goal of reaching the United States.

According to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency, since last October 1, the date on which fiscal year 2022 begins, almost 115,000 Cubans have arrived at the southern border of the United States. , a figure that is close to the numbers of Mariel.
