Postponed opening of the border with Colombia

Postponed opening of the border with Colombia

The governments of Guillermo Lasso and Iván Duque confirmed that the new date for the resumption of cross-border transit is December 15.

Ecuador and Colombia postponed the opening of their border common land, which was raised today (December 1, 2021) with the requirement of a vaccination card against Covid-19, as of December 15 “considering the current situation that the world is going through” by the new omicron variant.

«After the conversation I had with the president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, and with a view to strengthening cooperation in health between the two countries, we decided that the date on which the border reopening It will be from December 15, “said the president of Colombia, Iván Duque, in a message on his Twitter account.

Lasso pointed out that the decision was made jointly “due to the current situation in the world and the health” of the inhabitants.

The two countries had agreed to reopen the passage of citizens and carriers through land border crossings, which had been closed since the outbreak of the pandemic of the coronavirus in March 2020.

The presidents mentioned that one of the reasons for reopening the border was to normalize connectivity between the two countries and also to put an end to the illicit activity of human smuggling that extorts those who cross the illegal crossings.

In recent months, goods were only allowed to pass through a border deposit mechanism, where they were collected by carriers in the country, which made the process laborious and took longer to move cargoes.

The decision was made during Duque’s visit to Ecuador on November 21, after a meeting with his Ecuadorian counterpart; However, both agreed to a new extension due to the uncertainties caused in the world by the appearance of a new variant of coronavirus, described as “very worrying” and of which yesterday the first cases were detected in Brazil.

The fear of the authorities and why it has taken more than a year and a half to reopen the passage is that the opening of the border could generate an outbreak that ends up getting out of control and jeopardizing their campaign to control the disease. EFE
