Migrants: 59.2% did not receive information about services

60.8% of migrants applied to the PPT between March and April 2022

The National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane) This Friday it published the latest edition of the Migration Pulse Survey, which measures the perception and living conditions of this population in the country.

(60.8% of migrants applied to the PPT between March and April 2022).

In the measurement, which includes the months of March and April, 59.2% of those surveyed said they had not received information on how to access services in the national territory on education, formal work, regularization, health, justice, housing or water and basic sanitation. Of this total, 60.9% of men responded that they had no information about these services and in the case of women the figure reaches 57.5%.

In this regard, Juan Daniel Oviedo, director of Dane, perceives a gap in access to services despite regularization efforts by this population.

“We see two things, a lack of communication or pedagogy and second, possibly a lack of deepening of some specific actions that go in favor of the integration of the Venezuelan migrant population”, Oviedo noted.

At a general level, only 20% of migrants have heard how to access education, formal work, the PPT and health. Most of them know about these services through government institutions (23.4%), social networks (18.9%) or through a family member (13.9%).

“This requires using these two channels more intensively in order to improve the apprehension of these tools by the Venezuelan migrant population”added the director of the Dane.

HEALTH

On the other hand, segregated by services, the item with the least information on the Venezuelan migrant population was health. The Pulse of Migration Survey determined that 45.4% of migrants living in Colombia have needed some health service in the last 12 months, including 59.0% of people over 55 years of age.

By gender, 38.2% of men have required health services in the country, while 52.7% of women have required it, that is, there is a significant gap between men and women compared to health services. 14 pp health

“We are seeing a vulnerability of Venezuelan migrant women to the extent that more frequently they are the ones who have the greatest demand in the health service. In addition, we conclusively see that the 55-year-old population, 59% of them, needs or has needed access to this service”, Oviedo said about it.

El Dane also revealed that 50.1% of migrant respondents who do not have access to health in Colombia reported having needed some health service. Added to this is the fact that 21.3% of those surveyed said they had not received information on how to access the service.

The survey also shows that to the extent that Venezuelan families have greater access to health services, the less they need to go to it.

For the March-April period, 35.4% of those surveyed said they did not need a health service (and have access to it), while 64.6% who do not have access have needed it.

“The health coverage of the migrant population is important since it avoids emergency care”, Oviedo fired.

60.8% APPLIED TO THE PPT

For access to benefits in health, education or work services, Venezuelan migrants must request the Temporary Protection Permit (PPT), a document that regularizes their stay in Colombian territory.

The Dane revealed that 60.8% of the migrants surveyed reported having applied for the Permit and of that total, 42.5% were approved.

Of the total number of respondents who applied for the permit, 52.7% did so to improve
their income and 19.6% to access education and health.
