USA eliminates COVID-19 test requirement to enter the country

Aeropuerto, EE. UU., COVID-19

MIAMI, United States. – The United States Government lifted the requirement of a negative test of COVID-19 to foreigners who are going to enter its territory, according to media reports from that country this Friday.

The decision marks the end of one of the strictest requirements in the United States to control the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

In this way, international travelers (US residents or citizens) will no longer have to show the result of a negative COVID-19 test carried out in the last 24 hours before entering the country, announced Kevin Muñoz, one of the spokesmen for the White House.

Tourists or international travelers who do not have residence or citizenship in the United States must present their vaccination card to prove that they are inoculated against COVID-19.

The requirement went into effect in 2021 and applied the same to residents and citizens as to foreign tourists who wished to set foot on US soil.

Although initially the test had to be carried out in the last three days before entering the country, in November 2021, when the omicron variant of the coronavirus skyrocketed the number of cases, the Biden administration established that the COVID-19 tests had to be carried out 24 hours before to embark on a journey to the USA.

The new measure will take effect this Sunday.

According to Muñoz, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will evaluate the measure every 90 days, which could be restored if a new variant of a worrisome nature emerges.

A month ago, the United States became the first country in the world to exceed one million deaths from COVID-19. Likewise, the country continues to be the nation with the highest number of infections and deaths from the pandemic.

According to the Johns Hopkins Study Center, the US registers more than 85 million cases, with the city of Los Angeles registering the most cases of coronavirus: more than 3 million positives and the number of deaths exceeds 32,000.
