Rains in Nicaragua have generated floods in 148 municipalities

The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter) reported that this weekend tropical wave number six will enter the country causing “light to great intensity” rains. The latest rains have left 148 municipalities affected by floods and three people killed by lightning strikes.

“Therefore these next few days we will always have rains of light intensity to moderate intensity occasionally and in a quite isolated way, we could have some heavy rains, but very isolated. Here the important thing is that we remain vigilant, because the soils, due to the large amount of rain that has fallen, are in a state of high saturation and therefore we could have some flooding or some flooding”, warned the Director of Meteorology of Ineter, Marcio Roof.

The rainy season is just beginning. This is the third week of winter 2022. The National System for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Attention (Sinapred) reported that throughout the national territory there are at least 1,900 critical points for floods due to rains and landslides.

“Since May 19, which was when the rainfall began and until now, the areas with the highest accumulated rainfall are located in the West, in the South Pacific, in the North Caribbean, the accumulated amounts are quite high,” added the Synapred.

Regarding the fishing activity, they stated that the seas are in optimal conditions for navigation, although they recommended that small and medium-sized vessels take the pertinent precautions, especially if the rains are persistent.

The Nicaraguan Army announced that it remains alert and “monitoring a meteorological phenomenon, which will affect the Nicaraguan Caribbean Sea from Friday (June 10) until Sunday (12) in the autonomous regions of the North and South Caribbean Coast.”

On the night of Wednesday, eight, the Chinandegan María Susana Lainez Rodríguez, 59, died of a cardiac arrest resulting from the impact of a lightning strike.
