Opposition institutions and politicians reject the sentence that weighs on Áñez and point to the MAS

The reactions to the conviction of former president Jeanine Áñez begin to be seen on social networks from where organizations and politicians opposed to the government of the Movement to Socialism (MAS) expressed their opposition to the sentence of 10 years that the former authority received and they also point to the judicial system, which they brand as biased.

Organizations

César Muñoz, of Human Rights Watch, wrote several messages on Twitter about Áñez’s sentence. In the first he expresses his concern: “Bolivia: We are concerned about the way in which criminal proceedings have been carried out against former president Jeanine Áñez”

In subsequent tweets, he regretted that there is political interference in the Bolivian judicial system and recalled: “All criminal investigations must be carried out in accordance with due process, including the presumption of innocence and be carried out in accordance with the standards established by international law.”

From National Unity (UN) they issued a statement in which they see the actions of “judges manipulated by power against former president Jeanine Áñez”, they describe the day as “disastrous for Bolivian democracy” and attack the judicial system: “It cannot there is nothing so degrading for democracy, for justice and for citizen morality than those who they are called to impose the law, be those who break it for political convenience and for corruption.

In addition to denouncing that there have been abuses and actions contrary to the Constitution during the process against Áñez, the UN expresses its solidarity with her.

The Committee for Santa Cruz describes this situation as the consummation of “one more outrage by corrupt justice.” In a civic entity statement, it indicates that this “Shameful ruling only highlights the lack of independence of the powers of the state”.

In the document recall the denounced fraud of the national elections of 2019, which ended with the resignation of authorities, such as that of former President Evo Morales, who ended up going to Mexico on a plane sent from that country.

“We denounce before the international community and before world justice organizations and human rights, ignominy, abuse, outrage, political persecution, violation of laws, to the Political Constitution of the State and international treaties, of the MAS Government and the Bolivian justice, with this sentence against an innocent (ex) president”, expresses the Civic Committee.

former presidents

Former President Carlos Mesa, on his side, tweeted: “Masism has just committed one of the most infamous political crimes in Bolivian history, by using the servile justice system to convict without any evidence or crimes to a former constitutional president. The setback of democracy and the rule of law is shameful”.

“Infamous sentence. @JeanineAnez is denied responsibility trial, They violate the principle of legality, they prosecute her doped and they condemn her as “unconstitutional”, when she was endorsed by @TCP_bolivia and Masistas Congress and recognized by the international community. @UNIndepJudges”, Jorge Quiroga stated in a tweet in which he labels the UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Diego García-Sayán.

more reactions

“The justice system acted as the operational arm of the MAS. He organized a fictitious process to ignore the legitimate struggle of an entire people against the electoral fraud of Evo Morales. The 21 days were not a coup, it was the awakening of the citizens to save democracy. The abuse of masista justice by condemning former president Jeanine Áñez will not change that truth at all, ”said Santa Cruz Governor Luis Fernando Camacho on his social networks.

For his part, Samuel Doria Medina published: “The sentence against Jeanine It does not stain those who received it, but those who imposed it. against the law. One day we will restore the rule of law in Bolivia and this case will be studied as an example of everything that was wrong in Bolivia in 2022”

Vladimir Peña, former secretary of the Santa Cruz Governorate and former member of Democrats, Jeanine Áñez’s party, also used his social networks to refer to the ruling against the former authority.

“An unfair sentence that further discredits the judicial system and to the Government”, he published as part of a longer text in which he remarks that there was no coup d’état. “An unjust sentence will never be synonymous with justice, it simply pleases those who use their political power for revenge”. Later, he wished encouragement and strength to the former president.

The deputy for the Citizen Community Jairo Guiteras, in a concise trill, published: “Jeanine Añez, the first to pay with her freedom for the hatred of @evoespueblo (Evo Morales). This regime is abusive, run over and unjust.”

official authorities

The ruling party also expressed its position regarding Áñez’s conviction.

History was made today. Mrs. Jeanine Añez was sentenced to 10 years in the case of Golpe II for the self-proclamation and the violation of the rules of constitutional succession in our country in 2019 in the Coup d’etat”, Eduardo Del Castillo, Minister of Government, wrote on his social networks.

From the official account of the Ministry of Health, you can read a phrase attributed to Jeyson Auza, head of that State portfolio: “Justice gave its verdict, 10 years in prison for having usurped functions in violation of the law by assuming a position that did not correspond to her, from senator to president of the Senate to later proclaim herself president of the State, hence the mourning and pain of our brothers who still cry out for justice.”
