MIAMI, United States.- Between January and May of this year in Cuba there have been 4,062 traffic accidents and more than 300 deaths, which represents a daily average of 27 accidents, two deaths and 30 injuries, according to the news agency EFE.
The information, which cites an official source, indicates that the figure “shows growth compared to the years 2021 and 2020.”
The head of the Vehicle Registration Department of the National Traffic Directorate of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), Mario Ríos, said in statements to the official newspaper Granma that the eastern provinces of Holguín and Camagüey “are the ones that accumulate the highest number of victims. and average fatalities per accident.
According to Ríos, “the human factor determines 89% of the events”, and the main causes are “not attending to the control of the vehicle, violating the right of way, speeding, technical malfunctions and ingestion of alcoholic beverages”.
In 2021, the secretary of the state National Road Safety Commission, Reinaldo Becerra, assured EFE, 8,354 accidents took place, with an increase of 8.32% (632) compared to 2020. Which means that during 2021 there was a average of 23 daily incidents.
In 2017 there were 11,187 traffic accidents in Cuba, in 2018 (10,070); 9,421 in 2019 and 7,722 in 2020.
The main causes of traffic accidents in Cuba are, explained Becerra, the driver’s inattention, failure to comply with the right of way and speeding. But the number of accidents and their mortality is also influenced by the poor condition of the roads and the country’s aging vehicle fleet, where cars more than 50 years old travel. To this are added the poor signage on the streets, the lack of lighting and the little road education.
