Punta de Rieles prison has a new pavilion for university students

Beneficiaries of the INAU will access work internships in the Presidency of the Republic

In the open system establishment, located in Montevideo, there is capacity for 60 people who are studying different university degrees. The pavilion was refurbished by those deprived of liberty. At the inauguration, the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, highlighted the importance of providing rehabilitation and learning opportunities. “It’s proof that no one is lost,” he said.

The activity, held this Thursday 9, was also attended by the director of the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR), Luis Mendoza; the director of Coexistence of the Ministry of the Interior, Santiago González, and the National director of Social Protection of the Ministry of Social Development (Mides), María Fernanda Auersperg.

The pavilion, with space for 60 people, was refurbished by the inmates during three months of work. 47 people deprived of their liberty who are studying at university will be housed there. It will work in an open regime, with the category of “student house”, explained Mendoza. The establishment also receives teachers and students who offer tutorials.

Unit No. 6, in Punta de Rieles, houses 546 people, of whom 361 are trained at different levels and 415 work.

Heber, meanwhile, pointed out the effort of improvement of the inmates who carry out formal studies and prepare themselves in trades. Likewise, he highlighted the merit of those who take advantage of the rehabilitation opportunity provided by the State. “This is proof that no one is lost,” he asserted. In this sense, he thanked and underlined the support of the University of the Republic and Mides in the learning and reinsertion process.

The minister appreciated that prisons are more open and integrated places and that they do not function as places where people are “deposited” to serve years behind bars. He added that the current administration seeks to promote education, work, culture, sports and recreation. In this way, “you gain in humanity, skill and experience,” he said.

Then, the corresponding ribbon cutting and a tour of the facilities were carried out.
