The replacement for the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) 23/2021, known as the PEC dos Precatórios, by senator Fernando Bezerra (MDB-PE), was approved this afternoon by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Senate by 16 votes to 10. The matter will now be appreciated by the House’s plenary.
During the meeting, senator Fernando Bezerra, who is the government leader in the Senate, accepted amendments proposed by the senators, altering the most controversial parts of the text. By agreement of the leaders, however, it was agreed that the discussion regarding the final text will continue until the appreciation of the senators in the plenary.
“We are permanently open to dialogue, to understanding, until the moment of voting in the plenary, because the objective is to build this broader majority”, said Bezerra right at the beginning of the meeting.
The PEC, which has already passed through the Chamber of Deputies, frees up fiscal space in 2022 for the payment of the Auxílio Brasil social program, through the installment payment of court orders and the change in the method for calculating the expenditure ceiling provided for in Constitutional Amendment 95.
Precatório are debts of the Federal Government, states, municipalities and the Federal District, determined by a final court decision. They can be related to taxes, salary issues or any other cause.
