Almost 90% of 15-year-old students will not achieve minimum performance levels due to the impact of the pandemic

There are only a few days left until the end of the first quarter of the 2022 school year and the Ministry of Education (Meduca) and educators have a list with countless problems faced by children and adolescents, after two years of distance and blended classes, due to the prolonged closure of schools due to the pandemic.

Francisco Trejos, UNICEF Education Officer, commented that according to World Bank estimates for 2021, they indicate that almost 90% of 15-year-old students will not achieve the minimum levels of performance due to the impact of the pandemic and the lack of face-to-face education.

Learning has deteriorated and if we do not act in time, this could lead to a generational crisis that limits future opportunities for thousands of adolescents and young people.

Trejos added that some specialists have pointed out that for each day missed from class, it is equivalent to three days of learning loss. “That is to say, a school that suspends classes for 15 days, in the end, students are losing 45 days of learning, and without a doubt face-to-face education is vital, class attendance is key to beginning to recover learning,” he remarked. .

Regarding school dropout, which is also known as educational exclusion, consists of several factors; some have to do with the economy of the families, the lack of supply, since there are rural and urban areas where there is no supply for students to continue to seventh grade or tenth grade.

He also revealed that in preschool, 31 thousand children, between 4 and 5 years old, are not attending.
