The María Cavalleri Foundation (FMC) condemned the closure of its organization, assuring that the deputies of the National Assembly relied on “false accusations” to arbitrarily cancel its legal personality.
“It is incomprehensible that a place that brings well-being to people is closed,” lamented the FMC board. The Ortega steamroller, on June 2, resolved to outlaw 96 other organizations non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including FMC.
Through a release, the Foundation team maintained that the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo «wants to bury freedom, rights, people, good things. They want to bury us and they don’t know that we are seeds.”

The entity was created with the inheritance left by the Italian María Cavalleri, a lover of nature, good food, meetings and education and a nurse who contributed a lot to the health of Nicaraguan women. Cavalleri volunteered in the country during the 1980s and 1990s.
“The María Cavalleri Foundation is a space that cares for the land, people, culture, education and relationships. It is a place open to all people regardless of their religion, age, political party, skin color, social class, etc,” explained the NGO team, which was part of the Matagalpa Women’s Collective.
“It is incomprehensible that a place that brings well-being to people, care for nature and development to a country is closed. It is a violation of our body-territory”, he added.
National and international defense organizations have condemned this repressive action by the regime of massively canceling NGOs, alleging that they have “transgressed and failed to comply with their obligations” before the law, for which they “hinder the control and surveillance” of the General Directorate of Registration and Control of Non-Profit Organizations. Since 2018, Ortega has closed more than 400 NGOs.
