Mexican Foreign Minister: “The theme of the Summit will be Cuba and the blockade”

Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, Cuba, IX Cumbre de las Américas

MIAMI, United States. – The Mexican foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, envoy of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) to the IX Summit of the Americas, said this Tuesday to the day that the central theme of the hemispheric event would be the “blockade” of Cuba.

“The theme of the Summit will be Cuba and the blockade [embargo]”, which he described as “inhuman” in line with the official discourse in Havana.

“Cuba is a substantive issue and it will be throughout the Summit. I would not expect, and can almost predict, that most heads of state will refer to this exclusion as something inappropriate. That is what I have heard throughout the region,” he noted.

“The blockade against Cuba – he added at another time – has meant indescribable suffering for the people. Then also the president [mexicano] says: ‘We are not willing to start a new stage in Latin America if it is assumed that this is going to continue’.

In reference to the exclusion of the regimes of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the IX Summit of the Americas, Ebrard Casaubón also assured: “You cannot maintain old decisions, such as exclusions of this nature or the right of selective intervention with respect to other countries. ”.

“Many commentators say: ‘How barbaric, how dare they handle a position that differs from that of the United States,’ but they have already forgotten that Mexico was the only country that did not vote to remove Cuba from the OAS in 1962,” he said. .

López Obrador declined to participate in the Summit after the absence of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela became official, regimes that were not invited to the event because they were considered human rights violators.

“There can be no Summit of the Americas if all the countries of the American continent do not participate (…). Or there may be, but we consider that it is continuing with the old policy of interventionism, of disrespect for nations and their peoples,” AMLO said on Monday.

According to AMLO, the absence of the island’s regime was a wish of Republican and Democratic legislators, including New Jersey Senator Robert Menéndez, and of the Cuban community in the United States.

This Tuesday, Cuban-American Senator Marco Rubio celebrated the absence of the Mexican president from the Summit of the Americas.

“I am glad to see that the Mexican president, who has handed over sections of his country to drug cartels and is an apologist for tyranny in Cuba, a murderous dictator in Nicaragua and a drug trafficker in Venezuela, will not be in the US this week,” wrote the legislator.
