The so-called “iron hand” is not effective in ending the rise in crime and citizen insecurity that affect the country, considered the president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), Miguel Vargas Maldonado.
“Crime is a complex challenge that we must address very carefully, since the factors that stimulate it are closely linked to the lack of opportunities and the inequity derived from it,” sanctioned the leader.
“Iron fist is the easiest mechanism, but it has also turned out to be the least effective in the long term,” he warned.
“We must convince ourselves, once and for all, that we will not be able to defeat the criminals if we fight on their ground, if we are equal to them,” he continued.

Vargas Maldonado explained that combating insecurity, from the social democratic point of view, goes through the stimulation of wealth creation.
“This must happen from the implementation of inclusive social policies that encourage our young people to work, beyond a simple state subsidy, in addition to the construction of social referents more committed to respecting the laws and good customs,”
Vargas insisted that “the answer lies in strengthening democracy and maintaining the trust of the people with programs and public policies that promote economic recovery, with a distinctive stamp of solidarity, inclusion and social protection and environmental justice.”
“Our party opposes the implementation of temporary decisions that the government is assuming,” he said.
Vargas also stressed that “in contrast to the temporary decisions made by the government, the answer is not the use of force, that is the easy part.”
