President Jair Bolsonaro signed the nomination of Senator Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ) to be the new government leader in the Federal Senate. The information was published by the Chief Minister of the Secretariat of Government, Célio Faria Júnior, in a post on social networks.
“We are pleased to receive the nomination signed by President Jair Bolsonaro of Senator Carlos Portinho for Government Leader in the Federal Senate,” he wrote. Portinho was an alternate for Senator Arolde de Oliveira, who died in 2020 from complications from Covid-19. He is also the leader of the PL in the Senate, the same party as the President of the Republic.
The position of government leader in the Senate had been vacant for about six months, after the departure of Senator Fernando Bezerra Coelho (MDB-PE). This leadership is strategic at a time when Palácio do Planalto is waiting for the approval of a complementary bill to set a maximum rate of taxes on fuels and a constitutional amendment to reimburse the states for the reduction of taxes in the sector.
The appointment of the new government leader in the Senate needs to be formalized in publication in the Official Gazette (DOU).
