MIAMI, United States. — The United States Coast Guard (USCG) deported 49 Cuban rafters who had been intercepted last week in the Florida Keys, reported today The New Herald.
The migrants, who had arrived at different points in the United States between Thursday and Friday, were returned to the island on Monday on the Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell.
According to the Coast Guard, the Cubans were detained between Thursday and Friday in the waters of Long Key, the city of Marathon and Elbow Cay, in the Bahamas archipelago.
It is noteworthy that the migrants arrived in the Florida Keys despite poor weather conditions, marked by the disturbance that would later become Tropical Storm Alex.
Last week, a group of 99 Cuban rafters he was repatriated by the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Paul Clark. The Caribbean migrants were intercepted off the Florida Keys in seven operations carried out by the Coast Guard itself.
Days before, that same organization had repatriated other 26 Cubans than detained in similar operations in the same area.
Since October 2021, the Coast Guard has deported 2,186 Cuban rafters who have tried to reach the United States by sea. The agency indicates that this is the highest number of Cuban migrants intercepted at sea in more than six years.
The vast majority of Cubans detained at sea or intercepted on land after landing in the United States are returned to the island by the different forces in charge of protecting and patrolling the country’s coasts.
