Prisoners of the Cicpc Tucacas sew their mouths to demand to be transferred

A Window to Freedom has been denouncing that police cells are “the new prisons of the 21st century”, where the survival of detainees depends on the relatives of the inmate population. The 19 inmates participating in this protest action at the Cicpc already have a sentence, so they should be in jail serving their sentence

19 detainees who remain at the headquarters of the Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations Corps (Cicpc) Tucacas delegation, Falcón state, decided to sew their mouths as a pressure measure to be transferred to one of the 34 prisons in the country.

The protest measure began on Monday, June 6, and was made known thanks to an alert issued by relatives of the detainees to the NGO A Window to Freedom.

The 19 men deprived of liberty who participate in this protest already have a sentence, that is, they have already been sentenced for the crime or crimes of which they were accused, therefore, they should be in a prison serving their sentence.

This is how this pressure measure was born due to the lack of response to the transfer request.

Relatives reported that from this group there are detainees who have up to seven years in this detention centerNo, they have never been transferred and others have even served almost their entire sentence. Let us remember that the law establishes that the Preventive Detention Centers are for the detainees to stay for a maximum of 45 days during the investigation process to decide whether to proceed to the trial phase or not.

This is the second strike carried out by those deprived of liberty so far this year in the same compound. Although last year, the National Commission for the Judicial Revolution arrived, the objectives were not achieved and the detainees decided to make the second strike.

This Monday they did not allow food to enter, only water. Her relatives waited outside the Cicpc dungeons to await a response, although a private lawyer entered and verified that her mouth had been sewn shut and they were supported by the other detainees in the facility.

It was learned that the board of directors of the place, managed to communicate with the Criminal Court of Falcón state and this Tuesday 7, they expect a delegation to mediate with the detainees.

A Window to Freedom has been denouncing that police cells are “the new prisons of the 21st century”, where the survival of detainees depends on the relatives of the inmate population.

The data for the annual report on the situation of preventive detention centers in Venezuela were obtained through constant monitoring by this NGO with investigators in 19 states.

According to the last publication on 2021, it was confirmed that 22,469 men (92.78%) and 1,749 women (7.22%) were detained in these spaces, for a total of 24,218 detainees, when the total quota in The Preventive Detention Center was just 7,457.

In these spaces, men, women, and even adolescents continue to accumulate, many of whom have served years waiting for a place to be transferred to a penitentiary center, and some even serve the time of their sentence in these spaces.

The use and abuse of these dungeons as long-stay prisons is a violation of each of the detainees who are in them. More than 60% of the deaths recorded at these police checkpoints were due to preventable and treatable diseases. The only one that can solve the chaos that is increasingly leading Venezuelans to death in these preventive detention centers is the Venezuelan State.
