Jorge Mera was known as a valuable public servant and a citizen of human quality, described as a good professional, decent politician, capable official and, above all, a great human being.
Around 12:00 noon, Jorge Mera was attacked in his office by Fausto Miguel de Jesús Cruz de la Mota, who shot him several times, causing his death.
The day before his death, he attended the green ebony plantation (“Magnolia pallescens”) in Siberia, at the official entrance to the New Valley National Park as part of the commemoration of World Environment Day.
During the activity, he pointed out that it was his third time in the place where he planted a tree without imagining that it would be his last time.
“Together we are more in the protection of our environment and natural resources“, said.
Likewise, three days before his death, the minister traveled to Stockholm to participate in the conference: “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all; our responsibility, our opportunity”.
He argued that it was a high honor to represent the government under the slogan “One Earth”, stating that this slogan is the same as World Environment Day.
On his trip he paid his respects to the memory of Olof Palme, and his remarkable contributions to the relations between Sweden and the Dominican Republic.
Upon arriving in the country on June 5, on World Environment Day, he joined the institution’s scheduled activities for the celebration, which were held in the Constanza municipality, La Vega province.
Once in Constanza, he was in charge of delivering compensation to 300 farmers who vacated the Valle Nuevo National Park protected area in 2016.
Jorge Mera returned home as usual, what he never thought was that one day after his work for sustainable resources, death awaited him at the hands of a familiar face.
