They will limit the permanence of students in the 'U'

Ending the so-called ‘dinosaurs’ is one of the goals of the Gabriel René Moreno Autonomous University (Uagrm). Through a rectoral resolution, the university authorities seek to limit students’ permanence in classrooms to eight years.

Currently, 31% of the university population exceeds five years of permanence.

The rector of the Uagrm, Vicente Cuéllar, explained that the regulations are not retroactive and will be implemented from the next semester. “We are not going to leave the student alone because there is a rule that allows monitoring so that he is aware that he has to work a little harder,” said the university authority.

He added that When the student has reached the age of eight and has advanced at least up to the fifth semester, he or she may graduate as a middle or higher technician. And in the event that he cannot obtain that intermediate degree, he will be withdrawn from the university and may only be admitted through a previous evaluation, either by a Pre-University Course (CUP) or through the Academic Sufficiency Test. (PSA).

In his turn, Reinerio Vargas, Vice Chancellor of the Uagrm, stressed that the resolution seeks to promote academic excellence and support the admission of new students. “The most important thing is that now we are showing that by exercising our autonomy we are going to regulate the university,” Vargas stressed.

Rectoral Resolution 194/2022 establishes five categories (modules) to regulate the permanence of students. The first is for university students with academic regularity, when they are within the years of permanence established by the Uagrm. The second is for those who are on academic alert, that is, who have exceeded the time of the study plan or have at least one subject in which they have failed at least three times.

The third is for students with academic risk, that is, who have failed the same subject six times, regardless of whether it is in regular periods, summer courses or examination boards. The fourth, for students with a low level of achievement, that is, when they have not passed any subject.

Finally, there are the students who exceed the time of permanence, that is, those who have registered subjects in regular periods, but have exceeded eight years of permanence in university classrooms.

According to data from the state company of Santa Cruz, there are 88,668 students registered in this first semester of 2022. Of these, 61,555 are with a stay of up to five years, 17,668 have the time between five and eight years, 5,173 are between nine and ten, and finally 4,272 have a stay of more than 10 years.

The percentage of these figures reflects that 69% of university students are within five years of any of the Uagrm careers, while 20% are between five and eight years old and 11% are from the ninth year and above, according to official data.
